343 firefighters died on September 11th when the towers came down. At the St.Patrick’s Day Parade in 2002 a group of 343 firefighters marched up 5th Avenue. Each carried an American flag. Some carried a photo of a lost brother. 343 is a number. 343 men marching up the Avenue filled a city block. It was a sight that brought both tears and applause from the crowd. Since then, the 343 Brigade, as it has become known, has been a regular part of the annual parade. The reaction of all who watch as they pass is still the same. This year I was in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral as they came by. 343 men. Don’t ever forget them.
