I made this photograph of Dr. King as he spoke in front of the United Nations building at the largest anti-Viet Nam war demonstration ever held in New York City. Dr. King lead a march that began in Central Park and an estimated 250,000 people followed.
He was connecting the dots and that disturbed a lot of people. It was April,1967.
A year later, practically to the day, Dr. King would be shot dead on a motel balcony in Memphis.
This year ‘ MLK Day’ joins President’s Day to mark the occasion with store wide sales.
Dr. King’s supposed killer, James Earl Ray, was a grade school drop out, a drifter and a petty career criminal. He was not a Klan member and had never been involved with any racist or political group. He was arrested in London, traveling with a passport in the name of a Canadian police officer. Certain FBI records pertaining to the case are sealed until the year 2027.
