In
the days that followed the attack, thousands of flyers like these
appeared around the City. These were on the window of a store on
West 11th Street, a block from St. Vincent's hospital.
The entire block was covered with them. They were put up in the hope
that a loved one was somehow still alive somewhere, maybe
hospitalized, maybe wandering lost, dazed and injured. There were
photos taken at wedding, vacation photos, photos of smiling people;
photos taken in happy times.
Every
person pictured was already dead.
Nearby, on West 10th Street is a fire house, 18th Squad. None of the six men on duty that morning returned. Soon flowers, candles and signs began appearing in front of the empty building. In a short time, they covered the entire sidewalk.
