Man, I am totally PO'd at writing yet another one of these. Stromboli's
was the best in it's day. Even if the “new” guys didn't serve up
quite as good a slice as the “old guy” used to make, it was still
a neighborhood place of long standing that served up what it was
supposed to. It was on my way between Union Square and my
apartment, it was opened late and it often provided a welcome bit of
sustenance on my way home after a late night shoot.
Stromboli's
closed a few months ago, along with the rest of the stores on either side of it.
Bowl-More lanes upstairs hung in for a bit, but packed it in soon
after. It was the last real bowling alley in the neighborhood. Today, they were carrying out some of the last customers. The
building, which was a parking garage, is being converted into high
end condos. The little falafel place around the corner on 12th
Street is still opened, but not for long. It is the last of the dozen
businesses that have been there since around forever. The tobacco/newsstand was lucky to find a place across the street. The new condo
building will probably have a few store fronts, but don't hold your
breath for a decent slice. Some days, what they are doing to my neighborhood just sucks.
