Saturday's Snapshots

Things are getting interesting. This afternoon I got out of the subway at 23rd Street and 5th Avenue around 1:30. I was on my way to Home Depot to pick up some batteries for the smoke alarms. This probably has nothing to do with what happened next, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Anyway, at the conner there were a few cops and some NYPD verticals. Nothing unusual given the week, but they were there for a demonstration, and the demonstration was just arriving. Now this part of Manhattan is pretty flat, so standing at the corner, I could see a bunch of folks with signs and a few more cops heading uptown, but what I could not see was much of the Avenue behind them. But for the next 40 or so minutes, I saw a solid line, block after block walk past. Now I am talking full blocks here: the police wisely did not try to stop the march for crosstown traffic, so it was a continuous stream of people filling every block.

I walked down Fifth Avenue and they were still coming. Across 17th Street to Union Square – where the march began – and they were still coming out of the park. We are talking a lot of people.  Maybe 50,000? Probably more.

Am I repeating myself? Really, a lot of people.

If the goal of the march was Trump's NYC place on 56th Street and Fifth Avenue, then the front of the line was passing it while folks were still lining up in Union Square.  Maybe more like 75,000 people.

Like I said, things are getting interesting.  And for the first time since Tuesday night, I am feeling that there just might be a chance.

Ps: Saturday's evening news reported “nearly 25,000 demonstrators” marching up Fifth Avenue. Really? Average mile in NYC is 20 blocks and the march hit Fifth Avenue at 17th Street and went at least as far as 55th Street (that's a block from Trump's Tower-of-Power). So about 2 miles. Figure (conservatively) 1500 folks on each block at any point. For at least 3 hours, they filled ever block and were all moving. We are talking a lot more than 25,000. Just thought I'd add this.

Another network reported a "demonstration with 2 arrests" at Trumpie's Tower.

There ya go!
