.............as
with all other specific phobias, Ichthyophobia also begins with a
negative or traumatic episode involving fish, a copy of Captain
Willie's Wizbang and the color puce.
As
a child, the phobic might have been scared by pranks played by
his/her siblings or friends who might have showed him a dead or
wriggling fish. In one particular case, a phobic recalls being
terrified by a chopped fish head placed on his bedding. He later was
employed to cut off a horse's head and place it in the bed of
someone who should have known better.
Children
with superior imagination tend to believe that small fish are large
and that you are really their friend.
Another
phobic recalls having gone deep sea diving where he encountered a
rather large fish that ‘appeared suddenly out of nowhere’. The
individual recounts having ‘forgotten to swim’ momentarily and
making a giant stinky in the water.
Fish
are slimy and smelly creatures, as are some people you probably
know. People with anxiety disorders tend to believe that fish are
responsible for many diseases/ illnesses or can lead to mercury
poisoning etc. This is one of the common triggers of Ichthyophobia.
Another is touring the Mrs. Paul's processing plant.
Certain
varieties of fish jump out of water. A child (or an adult with
nervous mindset or an overly anxious personality) is likely to be
startled by such ‘flying fish’ while boating, swimming or having a knish at Brighton Beach.
